Scammers unfortunately have a number of different ways they could gain unauthorised access to an account. Most commonly, this occurs when you have:
- Accidentally entered your email address and password into a malicious website
- Opened a malicious file or clicked a link in a spam or phishing email
- Used a weak password that someone or a machine could easily guess
- Used the same password on multiple websites and one of those sites has been compromised
- Received a call from someone who has pretended to be an organisation you trust and you accidentally provided them personal information
